Greenlight – Steve McQueen Collection – 1/43 Scale – Steve McQueen’s 1957 Jaguar XKSS Scale Model Replica
Steve McQueen, aka the “King of Cool.” purchased this 1957 Jaguar XKSS in 1958 for $5,000. He became the third owner of the vehicle – chassis No. 713. This Jaguar was originally off-white with a red interior. but McQueen customized the appearance to suit his tastes – dark and subtle. The interior was designed by the nation’s premiere auto upholsterer Tony Nancy. “The Loner,” a well-known drag racer.
The Jaguar was nicknamed the “Green Rat,” and McQueen took his “race car, for the road” on many perilous adventures. In 1967 McQueen sold the Green Rat to Vegas tycoon William F. Harrah. Ten years later in 1977 McQueen purchased the car back from Harrah for twice as much as he paid in 1957.
After Steve McQueen’s death in 1980 his Jaguar was purchased by collector Richard Freshman for $148,000. Later on in 2000 Margie and Robert E. Petersen acquired the car and have owned it ever since. This 1957 Jaguar XKSS is currently on display in Los Angeles at the Petersen Automotive Museum.
