Like many legends, the Blackbird’s is filled with turns of fate that could have easily scuttled the car’s accomplishments, starting with the fact that Wangers wasn’t the original owner. It was ordered by Tony Knieper, the parts manager at Detroit’s Stan Long Pontiac, for his brother Mike. As it turned out, it was one of only three cars ordered with the Ram Air I engine and a column-shift Hydramatic automatic. It was also ordered with a 3.90-geared Saf-T-Track rearend and with undercoating deleted, because the car’s sole role was racing.
