The Mercedes-Benz “Ponton” series are a range of car models from Daimler-Benz, introduced starting in July 1953, dominated by sedans / saloons, and nicknamed ‘Ponton’, the German word for “pontoon”, referring to the slab-sided, three-box, overall shape of the cars — a postwar car design change, also generally known as ponton styling. Aside from the obvious visual innovation, the Benz ‘Ponton’ car design introduced construction changes that significantly improved automotive safety for passengers through better crash protection. Pontons constituted 80% of Mercedes-Benz’ car production between 1953 and 1959.
