The 1993 Toohey’s Bathurst 1000 was the 34th running of the great race, held on the 3rd of October 1993 at the Mount Panorama Circuit. 1993 was a difficult year for Peter Brock and the Bathurst race would be a tough one. He was still running with Mobil support, but not placing well in the Australian Touring Car Championship.
Qualifying 7th on the starting grid in the Toohey’s Top Ten would be the best Brock and John Cleland could get out of their Mobil 1 Racing VP Commodore, with Larry Perkins starting on pole, also in a VP Commodore.
After a battle at the start the VP settled in for a big day. Brock soon had 6th position in the field, then pitted on lap 33. Soon after all would not be plain sailing for the Commodore.
John Cleland in the driver’s seat had been thundering down Conrod Straight when the tail shaft snapped, tearing a hole in the floor and sending bits of metal into the cabin. Two long pit stops had now dropped the Mobil One VP Commodore to 35th position, from which it could only recover to 17th by flag fall.
Other VP Commodores would fare better with the top 5 positions and 8 out of the top ten, with Larry Perkins and Gregg Hansford victors in their VP. Peter Brock would return again to the Bathurst track the following year, hoping for a better result. Item includes certificate and production number plate, mounted to the chassis.
