ERTL – 1:18 Diecast Model – American Muscle – 1970 Ford Boss 302 Mustang with Shaker Hood – Blue
The term “BOSS” generally refers to the fastest and meanest car on the street. So it’s no wonder Larry Shinoda, then Ford’s Special Projects Design Office aptly named this version of Ford’s Mustang the “BOSS”.
Mechanically the BOSS 302 was bullet proof. Top-notch performance was achieved by applying Holley’s 780 cfm carburetor, aluminum high-rise intake, cast iron heads with huge ports and valves and a four bolt cast iron block. Horsepower was advertised at 290, but in reality was much greater. This engine propelled the BOSS 302 to 60mph in 6.9 seconds, and 1/4-mile times of 14.85 seconds at over 96mph.
From a styling point the BOSS 302 also lived up to it’d name. Attention getting grabber colours were accented by blacked out panels and mean looking BOSS 302 stripes. Controversial front and rear spoilers were added along eith slats for the fastback window creating a clean yet intimidating look.
At the racetrack, this car also was the “BOSS”. In 1970 Ford produced 7,013 BOSS 302 Mustangs to comply with racing regulations. Of the 7,013 cars it’s impossible to know how many were used specifically for racing, but an elite few were used to help Ford regain the coveted Manufacturer’s Championship in 1970.
Racing success, aggressive styling and superior engineering combine to make this classic American muscle car a favourite among today’s automobile collectors.
