GMP Knafel Pontiac 1970 GTO Judge die-cast model serialized plate

A personal friend of Pontiac General Manager Elliott M. “Pete” Estes and Chief Engineer John DeLorean, Bill Knafel was a senior member of a very exclusive club of Pontiac dealers with access to Pontiac’s “back door” racing operations. Pontiac’s counterpart to such celebrated Chevy dealers as Nickey & Yenko, Knafel won more races, set more national records, and won more national championships than any other Pontiac dealer. The 1970 Knafel Pontiac “Tin Indian” GTO is the most famous and accomplished of that famous Knafel lineage, and adding to that premiere status is this car’s exceptional underlying value as a rare Ram Air IV Judge. The Ram Air IV advanced the concept by a great leap, cranking out far more than its 370 horsepower factory rating and pulling like a train from the starting line.

But this GTO Judge is also much more than a production Ram Air IV. Prepared by Arlen Vanke and driven by Norm “Sonny” Tanner, the “Tin Indian” competed primarily in AHRA GT-2, GT-3, and F2 FA competition. It won the 1970 AHRA World Championship, claiming several World Records and multiple National Events along the way, including the 1970 Nationals in Bristol, Tennessee, and the Pro Am Nationals in Rockingham, North Carolina.
