Caterpillar introduced its first off-highway truck, the 769, in 1962, and it quickly set the standard for the industry. In the early ’70s, the company began producing larger trucks, and in 1986 introduced the first of the mining trucks. In late 2004 Caterpillar produced truck number 40,000, a 777D. Caterpillar construction and mining trucks including the 797, the largest mechanical drive truck in the world, are built at the Mining & Construction Equipment Division of Caterpillar Inc. in Decatur, Illinois.
