The 1973 Australian Touring Car Championship began on the 5th of March at Symmons Plains and concluded on the 15th of July at Warwick Farm after the completion of 8 rounds. While it was Australia's most professional driver Allan Moffat who dominated the 1973 championship series and took the title, it was Peter Brock, at the wheel of his Holden LJ XU-1 Torana that emerged as the rising star. A rocky start, black flaged at Calder for not being on the grid when the one minute board was shown, he found form and finished the season with three wins coming from Round 5 at Surfer’s Paradise, Round 6 at Adelaide and Round 8 at Warwick Farm. By Round 6 the championship was still technically within Brock's reach, but Moffat's reliability made him the odds on favourite and round 7 Oran Park saw the matter settled. Although Brock crossed the line first he lost his winning points in a post race stripping where officials found him to have an over sized exhaust. The final race saw Moffats Ford suffer an oil surge costing him an engine seeing Brock win that round. Brock also managed two second place finishes, at the opening Round in Symmons Plains and Round 4 at Wanneroo. These results saw Brock finishing in 2nd Place overall behind eventual winner Moffat in his Ford XY Falcon GT-HO Phase III.
