Built at the onset of the Second World War, Germany’s two Bismarck-class battleships were the fourth largest ever completed. Originally envisioned as fast raiders, refinements in armament and propulsion led to a reduction in range and cruising speed, making both ships inferior to those serving in the British fleet. The completed Bismarck ships had a displacement of nearly 42,000 tons, a top speed of 30 knots, and a main battery of eight 15-inch guns. Instead of engaging enemy battleships directly, Bismarck and her sister ship, Tirpitz, were assigned to convoy raiding missions, where they were better suited.
